Habitat ReStore

ReStore History

There are over 500 ReStores in the U.S and Canada. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge operates one of several ReStores proudly serving Louisiana. ReStore’s retail operation provides a valuable source of funding for Habitat for Humanity’s home building program through the sale of donated building materials. We are located just off Airline Highway and I-110.

The Baton Rouge Habitat ReStore first began in November of 2003.  Since it’s opening, more than 3,000 tons of building materials have been kept out of landfills.  In 2009 alone, more than 600 tons of building supplies were diverted from the landfills and sold for reuse, thus preventing them from ending up in a landfill.  These items include: light fixtures, sinks, toilets, countertops, wood, doors, windows, tile, wood flooring, grout, vanities, siding, cabinets, table tops, tubs, office equipment, small appliances, and large appliances.

Habitat’s ReStore recently accepted 140 pallets of bricks; with 400 bricks a pallet more than 100 tons of bricks will be sold at the ReStore instead of being thrown away.

Our Goals
•Help fund Habitat’s home building program. We are anticipating the construction of two additional homes each year with the proceeds from ReStore.
•Divert reusable building materials from local landfills. ReStore will keep several tons of building materials out of landfills on an annual basis.
•Provide the community with a source of low cost building materials.
•Create jobs and volunteer opportunities.

How It Works
ReStore accepts donations of new, or gently used saleable building materials, as well as store items that are overstocked and discontinued, and materials left over after construction projects. Our inventory ranges from cabinets, lighting and plumbing fixtures, doors, lumber, flooring, and windows – all sold at a discounted price.

How You Can Help
ReStore is an ambitious project and we need the help of a lot of people in many different ways to make it successful. You can help by volunteering, donating gently used building materials, or simply by shopping at ReStore.

Donations to ReStore are tax deductible.
In the fall of 2009, the Habitat ReStore opened a HOME GOODS.  The Habitat ReStore now sells decorative items (basketry, vases, statuary, knick-knacks, etc), dinnerware, small appliances, baby furniture, books and retro-furniture.  A craft section was also opened.  The craft section contains How-to-Do-it Yourself Decorations and finished crafts all of which are constructed from items found in the ReStore.

Please contact the Habitat ReStore on Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at (225) 355-1895 if you are interested in volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  Hours are flexible, and tasks would include receiving and pricing materials and helping customers locate items in the store.  The ReStore would also appreciate volunteers with extensive knowledge in plumbing, electrical, heating/venting, etc. that would be willing to teach staff and perhaps conduct monthly workshops.
